„My summer stays at TUM represented first of all a great relief from the day-to-day duties I have to deal with at my home University: two months per year fully devoted to research in an outstanding scientific environment, with excellent colleagues and enthusiastically dedicated students. The most significant professional consequences of my stays at TUM dealt with a great improvement of my knowledge in the field of multi-modality Molecular Imaging. It has been a very useful experience that continues now with several ongoing collaborative projects.“

„I have visited TUM on three occasions and all of them have been pleasant and enriching experiences, both professionally and personally. The existing atmosphere at TUM has provided me memorable recollections. I cherish the hospitality of Prof. Kennel and of his research group, without which it would not be possible to achieve my goals.
The motivation of the doctoral students with whom I have exchanged and developed ideas about electrical drives has opened new research topics for me, such as multiphase machines and predictive control. Also, being a member of an Examination Committee for Doctoral Degree has been an unforgettable honor. Last but not least, I will never forget the marvellous classical music concerts my wife and I had the opportunity to enjoy in Munich in the last semester of 2015.“

„I very much enjoyed getting to know the students at TUM and interacting with them. They bring new ideas and an enthusiasm that is very refreshing. They are asking the right questions that make you think twice.
My collaboration with TUM has been very stimulating because of the complementary nature of our scientific fields of expertise. A close and sustained collaboration between an academic institution and an industrial laboratory can lead to great innovations on both sides.
Personal relationships play a major role in the success of a collaboration and my personal experience with my host, the students and the administrative staff at TUM has been wonderful.“

“Being a member of the HPC Focus Group of the IAS at TUM was a highlight in my career. I worked with excellent and highly motivated PhD students and early career researchers. TUM is very strong both in computational science and in mathematics and I profited from both. In addition, I found a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere and events like lunch talks, meetings over coffee and annual IAS focusgroup meetings which led to many exciting discussions with some of the best researchers in a large variety of areas.“

Awards/ Honors (Selection)
– Zeferino Vaz Award for Excellency in Research, University of Campinas, Brazil (2008)
– Best Doctoral Thesis in Brazil – supervisor (Grand Award, Biological and Medical Sciences), CAPES, Brazil, 2009

„I have great Memories about the stimulating intellectual and interpersonal atmosphere at the Lehrstuhl Tierökologie, which underlies highly productive collaborations in a relaxed setting. Our discussions ranged widely from philosophical issues to sports banter. Participating in seminars and courses and noting interesting differences (compared to Brazil) in the cultures of teaching/learning, conceptual and applied subjects which students and young professionals try to address was another great experience.
At TUM I had the possibility of applying my theoretical and field experience to other ecological systems, together with learning about these systems from highly experienced colleagues and innovative junior scientists and could develope a clearer understanding of common ground and key differences between tropical and subtropical ecological systems in Brazil, and temperate systems in Europe. This has resulted so far in several papers with which I am very happy and quite proud, including one in’Nature‘.“

My days were filled with rich scientific exchanges with remarkable faculty and first-rate students that were challenging and fertilized ideas, that have led to research discoveries that continue to this day. The opportunity to have these discussions free of my administrative responsibilities at my home institution reinvigorated my love for science. Finally, my family and I came to know Munich as a warm, friendly city with a rich culture that we fondly think of as a second home.“
